Shakuntlam is a boutique retail store, which has been designed as an exclusive rustic and earthy interiors, representing an innovative and futuristic take on the sumptuous Indian crafts.

Taking inspiration from the store’s sheer simplicity of contemporary design and its poetic use of wooden textures, the material palette used for the furnishings is a mix of new materials and old caning techniques.

Rough polished wood is contrasted with accents of sleek brass fixtures for the display and storage systems, breathing a new life into this quaint store. The neutral, earthy color scheme with fresh tones of wood give the space a carefully fashioned minimal yet royal vibe, emphasizing the effortlessness of modern Indian craftsmanship.

Special attention has been paid to each and every minute detail, especially where different materials come together to create a seamless visual treat for the store visitors. Elements have been taken from the traditional embroidery patterns and reinterpreted into elegant patterns and installations for the store.

Cane, being a material inherent to the Indian culture has been used to create the display cabinetry in a combination with sleek brass details, expressing the language of weaves and patterns, while also creating visually light weight and fluid furnishings. It makes for a stimulating experience, fusing the old with the new and the traditional with the local, to create a highly sophisticated warm, cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

The feature display on the rear wall is a take on the act of sewing glass beads as a classical architecture column type shaped in wooden beads and held together with delicate brass pipes. Inspired embroidery motifs can be seen as minimal patterns in wood on the display units across the store, subtly creating an assorted display of wooden handcrafts. It creates an immersive and memorable user experience, highlighting the idea of simplicity being the ultimate sophistication.
